Chinese wine buyers visit South Australia’s wine regions

02 Dec 2024
South Australia’s iconic wine regions are on show this week to a delegation of wine buyers from China as part of the South Australian Government’s $1.8 million Wine Exporters China Re-engagement Support Program.

The Chinese wine industry leaders are one of the first delegations to participate in a three-day familiarisation and immersion visit since before the COVID-19 pandemic and the removal of wine tariffs on Australian wine in March 2024.

Since March, South Australian wine exports to China have risen by 17,388 per cent to $479.8 million in the year to September 2024.

The Chinese wine buyers have been accompanied by the South Australian Government’s Senior Wine Export Adviser, Ms Emily Xu, who is based in Shanghai and funded through the Wine Exporters China Re-engagement Support Program.

During the three-day visit, the buyers will meet with winemakers from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Clare, and will taste an array of wines from 70 producers from eight South Australian wine regions.

To support two-way market activation and immersion, the Department of State Development and its partners, have facilitated opportunities for South Australian wine exporters to attend key in-market industry events in China in 2024, with more opportunities planned for 2025.
