South Australia's hydrogen capabilities on show in Tokyo
South Australia’s status as a leader in renewable energy and hydrogen technology has been showcased at one of the world’s largest energy expos in Tokyo.
The South Australian Government has joined with State industry partners to support a South Australian presence among the more than 400 exhibitors at Fuel Cell Expo (FC Expo).
Trade and Investment Minister Nick Champion was in Tokyo for the three-day event, which is a premier event for business innovation in hydrogen technologies attracting over 50,000 visitors from across the globe.
FC Expo is particularly significant to Japan as it embraces decarbonisation technology and innovation, backed by the country’s target to become carbon neutral by 2050 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 46 per cent.
FC Expo provides a platform to showcase South Australia’s green energy sector while connecting with key global investors, manufacturers, researchers and policymakers.
South Australia’s participation at the Expo follows Minister Champion’s meeting with Mr Shozo Kudo, Secretary General of the Parliamentary League on Hydrogen (PLH).
PLH is responsible for delivering Japan’s hydrogen legislation to enable the production of hydrogen, infrastructure and ammonia supply.
The State Government is engaging with PLH as part of developing its own legislation, the Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act, to facilitate South Australia’s growth into the hydrogen industry.
This event promotes significant industry development and investment opportunities available including the proposed multi-billion-dollar hydrogen hubs at Port Bonython and Cape Hardy, as well as the South Australian Government’s own $593 million Hydrogen Jobs Plan – all part of a $20 billion pipeline of renewable energy projects.
The Minister has taken the opportunity to re-engage with major Japanese companies exhibiting at FC Expo, such as Toyota, Mitsubishi and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries with whom the State Government signed Statements of Cooperation with during its previous trade mission.
Trade opportunities with South Australia extend to carbon-neutral liquified natural gas, low emissions steel and iron ore, batteries, and carbon capture and storage, as both economies transition to a lower-carbon future.
